Discover Metz

Metz, located at the heart of Lorraine, is a city with a thousand-year history, blending remarkable
architectural heritage with contemporary cultural vibrancy. It enchants visitors with its rich past,
majestic buildings, and green spaces that invite leisurely strolls. Its strategic location at the
crossroads of Europe makes it an unmissable destination for lovers of culture, history, and
nature.

Known as the “Lantern of God”, this Gothic cathedral is a gem of religious architecture. With its 6,500 m² of stained-glass windows, some designed by masters like Marc Chagall, it is one of the brightest in Europe.

Its spire rises 88 meters high, and its imposing architecture, combined with the delicate details of the stained glass, leaves visitors in awe.

A symbol of modern Metz and its openness to contemporary art, this exceptional museum offers an audacious program, hosting some of the most innovative temporary exhibitions. Its architecture, resembling a Chinese hat and designed by Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines, captures attention and fascinates from the very first glance. The Centre Pompidou-Metz has become a central hub for art lovers across Europe.

Built on an island in the heart of the Moselle, the Temple Neuf stands out with its neo-Romanesque architecture and idyllic setting surrounded by water and greenery.

Illuminated at night, it offers a magical spectacle that attracts photographers and visitors seeking tranquility.

The legend of the Graoully, the iconic figure of Metz, tells the story of a fearsome dragon that once terrorized the city’s inhabitants. This monster lived in the Roman amphitheater and ravaged the region until the arrival of Saint Clement, the Bishop of Metz. With courage and the strength of his faith, Saint Clement managed to tame the Graoully by using his belt to capture and lead it out of the city, freeing the people of Metz from its terror.

This legend is so significant that Rue Taison, where the dragon could be found, takes its name from the warning cry “Taisons-nous!” (Let’s be quiet!), which the locals used to avoid drawing the dragon’s attention. Even today, Metz keeps the legend alive through sculptures and depictions of the Graoully throughout the city, and visitors can discover iconic places linked to this founding myth.

Located in Scy-Chazelles, near Metz, the Robert Schuman House is a place of great historical and European significance. Robert Schuman, often regarded as one of the founding fathers of Europe, lived here from 1958 until his death in 1963. This unique site allows visitors to learn
about the life and commitment of this leading politician, who played a crucial role in Franco-German reconciliation and the creation of the European Union.

The house is now a museum, preserving personal objects and archives that illustrate Schuman’s ideals of peace and cooperation. The gardens, open to the public, offer a serene setting with panoramic views of the Moselle Valley—an ideal place to nderstand the inspiration that drove Schuman to work tirelessly for peace in Europe.
